Welcome to this Divine Service on the 14th February  -

Last Sunday before Lent (Estomihi)

See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. (Luke 18:31)

Liturgical greeting, Psalm 31, Prayer

Song: At the cross (Love ran red)

Gospel Reading: Mark 8:31-38

Mark 8:31-38 3

Jesus Predicts His Death

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Apostle's Creed

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to the dead.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy Christian church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon: Isaiah 58:1-9a

True Fasting

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins. For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’

“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarrelling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

Prayers of Intercession and Lord's Prayer

Intercession 14.2.

Gracious and loving God,
look upon us and hear our prayer
as we prepare for the holy Season of Lent.
By the good works You inspire,
help us to discipline ourselves
and to be renewed in spirit.

Without You we can do nothing.
By Your Spirit help us to know what is right
and to be eager in doing Your will

even if it means taking discomfort or even suffering upon ourselves.

If it is your will for us to bear your cross, give us the strength to do so.

Teach us to find new life through returning to your way of justice and kindness.
Keep us from sin, and help us live by Your commandment of love.
God of love, bring us back to You.
Send Your Spirit to make us strong in faith

and active in good works.

Open our hearts to those whom You love,
let us see their pain and make us merciful.

Let us see injustice and strive for justice
by Your power and in Your name.

Lord, during the coming Lenten Season,
nourish us with Your Word of life
and make us one with You in prayer and compassion.

Fill our hearts with Your love
and keep us faithful to the Gospel of Christ.
Give us the grace to rise above our human weakness and selfishness,

to live according to the power of the Holy Spirit who resides in us.

Father, our source of life,
We reach out to grasp Your hand;
let us walk more readily in Your ways.
Guide us in Your gentle mercy,
for left to ourselves we cannot do Your Will.

Lord of love, source of all blessings,
prepare us for the glory of Your Kingdom.
We ask this through our Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Brother,
Who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Benediction

Benediction

May the beauty of God be reflected

in your eyes,

the love of God be reflected in your hands,

the wisdom of God be reflected in your words,

and the knowledge of God flow

from your heart,

that all might see, and seeing, believe
